The Legend of the Raven

by Chev. Rev. Brijdrix de Prytani - Sangraal
 Age Group: Adult

"Long ago there was darkness.
There were those who longed for more.
The Raven was one of those who longed for more than darkness.
The Raven, in his darkness, learned of the greedy Chieftain who kept the glowing orb captive.
The Raven, upon hearing of this injustice, flew down to the river.
The Raven saw the Princess, daughter of that greedy Chieftain.
The Raven knew her thirst and turned into a pine-tree needle and floated upon the river.
The Princess, as it turned out, drank the pine-tree needle which was the Raven in disguise.
The Princess, as a result of drinking the pine-tree needle, became pregnant.
As is usual, the Princess gave birth, to a son who was the Raven in disguise, after the months passed.
Time passed and the Raven, disguised as the greedy Chieftain's grandson, grew and learned of the glowing orb.
The Raven cried and demanded to see the glowing orb. He cried and stammered violently, until the greedy Chieftain, faltering with an uneven judgement, gave into the boy and let him look upon the glowing orb.
Upon seeing the glowing orb, the Raven; disguised as the greedy Chieftain's grandson, transformed into the Raven and snatched up the glowing orb.
The Raven flew around frolicing and playing with the glowing orb.
From tree-top to tree-top he froliced.
Those loyal to the greedy Chieftain tried with intense effort to regain possession of the glowing orb. They tried force and they tried flattery, but none suceeded in possessing the glowing orb again.
Then, without warning, the Raven wisked the glowing orb into the sky--so that none would live in complete darkness.
The Raven, having returned to the river from whence he tricked the greedy Chieftain's daughter, noticed his feathers had been singed black by the reflection he saw on the water.
He mused over his perdicament, but did not care -- because, afterall, the Light allows everyone, both by day and by night, to see his darkness and they remember the sacrifice the Raven made in order to defeat the darkness.
The Raven wears his blackness as a badge of honor and hopes that we remember all that he did to remove the darkness from our heads."

Author's Notes: Nota Bene: The Shamanic aspects of our tradition allows for belief in totems. The Raven is one of many totems relevant to our particular path. It should also be noted that individuals may certainly perceive individual totems just as surely as Tribes, Clans, etc. may have their own perceptions of group totems.
The concept of Shape-Shifting is also revealed in this Legend as well. Shape-Shifting should be obvious but if it is not it is about changing form either literally or symbolicly -- such as the example of son, grandson, e.g. perception as exemplified in this particular Legend. Shape-Shifting may refer to personal growth and awareness changes on a deeply psycholocial level and more meanings in addition to the obvious.
