I hear that shoes are the real you,
show how your life is lived in tattered laces and loose glue
that cements them together, a whole being on display
by worn, rubber soles.
I also find the theory true of handbags
held by bubbly girls in pink; I watch, sitting across the isle
on city buses, pour over their choice of purse,
plaid with gilt, pearl-encrusted pins,
or austere in dull mahogany.
Author's Notes: I always thought it was an interesting observation, always seeing these sorority girls on the campus shuttle wearing one thing with accessories that were completely different, and not in the funky "I'm trying NOT to match" sort of way. And I had once heard that of all things a person wears, a person's shoes are the best giveaway about a person... concerning his life, status in society, how he sees himself... Interesting thought, to say the least, in my opinion. I may update it then; it's one of the poems I've written that I'm more proud of.
