The Beggar and the Witch

by Brighid LeSidhe
 Age Group: Adult

The night is cold, the moon is black Bitter rain pours on the faded earth It soaks through to her very bones For her there is no warmth or mirth.
Yuletide comes, ‘tis fast approaching Happy homes are warm with light But for this girl with a broken spirit Yuletide eve is a wretched night
She walks between the festive houses Looking for somewhere to warm herself Those who see her turn her away They only think of themselves
They have no room for a poor beggar child Too busy feasting to bother to care She looks to each and every house But no comfort is to be found there.
She walks up to the very last home An old wise woman lives inside Everyone whispers, they say she’s a witch But the girl is famished, so she swallows her pride.
She knocks upon this snubbed woman’s door A few passerby look at her shabby figure with disdain The woman comes, and asks “Who is it?” She sees the shivering girl, and says “Come child, get out of the rain”
“I haven’t got much, some bread and a goose, But you’re welcome to as much as you please” She thanked the old woman, removed her wet coat And sat down to eat ‘til her hunger had eased.
The old woman watched her with thoughtful eyes Her own children had grown and left home This young girl had no one at all And the old woman didn’t much like to be alone.
She said to the girl “you can stay if you like I don’t have much to give but I’ll teach you what I know. It isn’t much, but you’ll be fed And at least it’s somewhere to keep out of the snow.”
The girl looked up, she smiled and said, “They all said you were mean, ugly and bad, But I see none of this, only wisdom and good. You’re the only one who helped me when I was starving and sad.”
The woman really was a witch, and the girl soon learned her healing ways, And plenty thanks to her kindly soul , The girl is still alive today. (She lives in all of you.)
