Over Barges

From a fifth floor St. Louis apartment window,
I look down
upon the Mississippi. Small figures
walk on an inward leg of the sea, iron islands
under their feet.
Kids run around the working men some days, playing
in coiled ropes on deck. With strained eyes I see
the colors of their clothes. A red-tail soars past,
and my eyes follow his cries of victory
beneath the sun’s sky as he struts upon an invisible road.
All I see is the blue down below,
farmland across the river,
autumn trees on the Illinois side of the way;
an errant air
catches me through the screen
and I smell new winds as the season keeps changing.
