Age Group: Adult
Dress hem swinging,
mid-air foot tapping,
finger-and-thumb hair twiddling
looking across the seated room.
Stranger, an African figure steeped
in shadow, he stood;
searching, returning gaze.
Dark auditorium brought
to light, overheads revealing
our fleshy public masks.
He wore striped cotton,
and I, rainbow velvet skirt;
he shifted against that wall
and I looked away.
Silence—
and morning class began.
Author's Notes: A moment in geology class, back before my lab professor began to annoy me. =P
