Schirmer Street

by Rook
 Age Group: Adult

Three streets from the main road, a long length of my life that I descend to a convenience store beneath a harsh sun.
It is summer va-cay and my mom has futilely decided to attend a two-year medical school, gone each day; I walk, $1.23 in hand, fished from my living room floor.
Broken brick buildings and bony, frothing dogs loom in dusty yards to each side of the street I tread; I get closer to the busy main road, one red light and a row of cars barring my way from food.
I try not to think that if I'm caught by my neighbors, raw, lanky kids, I'll be bruised as they are; I keep on, unmolested by vultures, 12-year-old frame shaking, finally reaching the store.
Ah! Cool air, and I am thankful; I rest. I buy two granola bars, one for my brother.
I exit, carefully watching the pavement I've covered, speeding, receding beneath my burning, sweaty feet as I greedily tear open one wrapper, the granola disappearing into my dry mouth.
The unrelenting sun still beats its fists on my scalp as I return to the brown, roach-ridden house, a ramshakle picture of its former self, to give my brother his half of the food, food we never own.
Author's Notes: Memory from when I was twelve. That house - that neighborhood - sucked. This just talks about one day of many showing why I hated living in St. Louis.
