Slaying the Dragon

by Dalhanahue

Age Group: Adult

A dragon am I, aged ten-thousand years
The only alliances I poses are crude seclusion and tears.
On the Southern shores of Ireland lies hidden my cavernous home
With walls stained from mortal blood and a floor sculpted of bones,
Yet for every soul I took I did so with tearing eyes.
'Twas merely in self defense in effort to keep my own life.
Many a myopic beings have attempted slaying my soul
With out even questioning what or if any knowledge I might hold.

Too many humans fear what they do not understand
And this is an ignorance that shadows the kind that is called man.
Yet instead of trying to unriddle the mystery that is myself
They seek out to be rid of me and damn my soul to hell.
A hell, which until they invented it, in my world did not exist.
A world where once peace ruled over all has now come to this.
Everyday I am forced to take a life to save my own
And bare in mind I am no young pup I am ten-thousand years old.

It saddens me to think of the way things have come to be.
Yes, I remember a time when in my presence, even the smallest creatures wouldn't flee.
I was welcomed, loved, and acknowledged among the tribesmen in those days.
But when the Old people were driven from this land, forgotten were the Old ways.
I could have taught them so much, how to talk to the animal and tress
And of course the secrets that are hidden in the forest if only they'd listened to me.

Never once have I been wounded or even nicked by the sword of a knight
Yet blood pours from my soul, and my heart is no longer light.
I was once considered so beautiful, poet and wise.
Now I am hunted for pleasure and for my severed head comes a prize.
The knights are too blind to see that they have already won.
My ways and the people of old are over and done.

And so tonight shall be the last time I will close my eyes.
The last time for me to look up and find peace in reading the skies.
I have lived many years and held the secrets of Mother Earth.
Tonight I will return to her womb and await for the time of rebirth.
May there still be those who follow and walk on the old path,
May they thrive and all children of nature be blessed.
This Dragon's soul has been slayed by ignorance
And for now I take to rest.
