Shadows of the Past

Age Group: Adult
Walk in the shadows and face who you are
Not the pretty version
created for public or a memoir
but the part that shies from the light of truth's glow
Twisted and misshapen from perversion
The one the world never sees
The one buried in damp hankies
Scarred and Sacred and Lost
knowing the true price of silence's cost
Kept quiet too long
It needs its voice now to be strong
Self-loathing and condemnation left too long to fester
the eyes having lost all their luster
But now you view through
Love and forgiveness
past wounds viewed with serene calmness
Healing as been let in
just by realizing you are not guilty of the sin
The guilt belongs to the one who hurt you
Where they are mired in filth
you have stood up, washed yourself clean and started anew
So forgive yourself for childhood weakness
Wipe away the hearts dullness
and know you are better than him
You rose above all that was grim
despite the hurt and the shame
with the monster is the home of the blame
he took your innocence carelessly
however you rose above it and faced your shadow bravely
Now knowing your endurance and strength
Rape was what was done not what is
no more does it define you as a person
so let the pain and shame lessen
And no you are more,
than the label that fell on you
know you are more wholly you than you have been in years.
