Momma, What is Magic?

by Dalhanahue

Age Group: Adult

Once upon an evening in kingdom far away
There sat a Queen and Princess; one spinning, one at play
The woman in a trance as skilled fingers did their work
The girl in contemplation drawing symbols by the hearth

"Momma, what is magic?" asked the Princess to the Queen
The Queen dropped her spindle as if shaken from a dream
Then picking up her spindle and the girl into her arms
She placed her daughter on her lap and set aside her yarn

Looking down into a mirror she could not help but smile
Then leaning in and soft of voice she whispered to the child,
"I'd ask if you can keep a secret, save I know you can,
So come now child, follow me. Hold on to mother's hand."

They walked through the courtyard to outside the palace walls
Then down a small winding trail past corn fields growing tall
Coming to the forests edge the Queen glanced all around,
She slipped out of her dainty shoes and stepped onto the ground

Puzzled yet compliant the little Princess did the same
Perhaps her and her mother were about to play a game
Then a look befell the Queen that left the girl beguiled
It was playful yet serene and almost even something wild

And all at once the Queen dashed off amongst all of the trees
Shouting out behind her, "Come, my child, and follow me!"
After a moment's pause the girl moved from where she stood
Then sounds of play and footsteps began to echo through the woods

Running to and fro, they played and skipped and laughed
Before they came together having found a well walked path
It led them to an ancient Oak, lush with moss and vines
With branches spreading up and out reaching for the sky

Encompassed by the forest the pair felt time stand still
Surrounded by the elements evoking quite a thrill
The setting of the sun cast a russet colored glow
The air began to tingle while West a river flowed

Beckoning the Princess, the Queen and her sat down
While fairies, nymphs, and spirits slyly gathered round
Then a hush befell the forest as the Queen spoke in rhyme
Of Mother Earth and Magic, the Elements and Time

"Magic is the mighty Oak that's stood for centuries strong
And the little bird perched upon it, singing at the dawn

Magic is a fairy ring that sprouts up in a glen
Bustling while the moon is full then hidden once again

Magic is a shining star you tell your hopes and dreams
Basking in its tranquil glow, drawing down its beams

Magic is a red tailed hawk soaring up on high
Emerging with the Air itself as master of the sky

Magic is a babbling brook; cool, crisp, and clear
And wells that seem to beckon you whenever you are near

Magic is a winter field veiled in powdered snow
Knowing that to be reborn it must embrace the cold

Magic is a summer day that seems to never end
As if Father time himself stops to stretch and bend

Magic is a journey you take within your dreams
Walking through a mystic veil while your body sleeps

Magic is around us all the time and every day
Taking many different forms in many different ways

Great magic comes not alone from talismans and charms
It originates in Nature, and is held within our hearts."

Author's Notes: I wrote this in an attempt to break my writers block. On a whole I'm fairly pleased with it but I do have a few little nit picky things I might later change or edit.
