The Black Cat

by Rook

Age Group: Adult

You always seek me out to cuddle
when I’m less than myself, and I lay myself around you
the way you can do, gather you to my chest
and put my nose in your fur, even though I’m allergic.
You purr and I love the rumble in my ear.

Though with less need, other times you want simply
to touch, so curl yourself in my arms, no matter
what homework or book is in your way; I gladly
accept your affection, though your
interruptions are an irritating habit.

I know you well: You were silent
until we gave you a fellow
feline friend to meow with. You have such
inquisitive, knowing expressions
when you look at me as if I’ve said something idiotic.
The “insult tail” you flip when I tell you
“It must be my way because eating string
pulled from my bath towel is a vet bill I don’t need.”

Liar Samhain cat—you’re actually deep brown
like the Bombay, showing your hue
in window sunlight, but unlike the breed, your
yellow eyes are actually spring-leaf green. Your ears
are big, almost too, but they fit
your blocky head and the square muzzle
I capture with my hand to stroke coarse whiskers.

Nearly seventeen pounds
as of October 2011, I’ve whittled you
to fifteen. Even so, your dense paws bruise
When you climb on me
in the morning, and bleary-eyed, I know
you want fed immediately, though
I never do first thing; too demanding.

I’ve loved you ever since I witnessed you drop
from your mom, March 2005, little wet bundle
of veins and blood delivered
for me to keep; your mewling presence
captured me, and I somehow, upon sight, felt
I already knew your name:

Horace. Irreplaceable.
