Playing in the ditches in our Sunday Dresses-
Getting filthy in the red clay, making messes.
When across the fields I see-
Aunt Mary Helen screaming, running to me.
I was not alone-
My eldest cousin was along.
Picking herself a switch-
Catching us all too swift!
Aunt Mary Helen picked us up-
Yelling at us was just not enough!
She meant business; She was tough-
This ordeal was going to be rough!
She had made our dresses-
She wouldn't tolerate our ruined messes.
Painstakingly, she had designed and sewn-
The dresses we had worn.
There's a spring in those clay ditches-
When I pass them, my memory twitches!
For I'll always remember Aunt Mary Helen-
Running across those fields, with switches, yelling!
