One day at Sunday School-
I became the class fool.
For when the teacher asked for visitors-
"No Mam, I'm a Pigott, " I answered.
Everyone began to laugh at me-
Not knowing what a visitor was, you see.
I turned red as a beet, wholly-
Wanting to crawl into a hole.
Never would I have spoken-
Had I known my feelings would be broken.
I couldn't hold back the tears-
Everyone snickered & scoffed that was near!
Later after church, at the dinner table-
I was asked what a visitor was.
I tried to explain, but wasn't able-
No one helped me in my cause.
Instead, I was ridiculed & shamed-
How cruel for this to happen again!
My uncle would always tease me-
Until Grandma would say: "Let her be!"
