Somewhere Here is a Clue.
by Sally Snow
Age Group: Adult
Our mission? To live and die.
We trust you'll use your power wisely
like the kind benevolent leader you are.
It is late morning before we can tear ourselves away.
We believe, we don't believe;
the paper crackles, the pages sag.
Somewhere here is a clue.
Hit by a train: a hundred million to one.
Fated to meet death: maybe if I was good enough.
If we could live anyway we want, eons from now would they understand us?
Tired? True to life.
Eventually we found a rhythme.
Did you think we wouldn't?
These are the only things we picked up and kept:
a tin letter T, a bracelet that said WWJD;
a full bottle of Southern Comfort, a fifty cent piece.
But even then we got sick of carrying each one.
We found no treasures, uncovered no mysteries.
Now and then the sun broke through.
We see a trailer in the distance.
If we could live anyway we choose, eons from now would they blame us?
