Pirates

by Sally Snow

Age Group: Adult

Why do kids like pirates?
Because they --
--don't do what they're told.
--get to do whatever they want.
--look for treasure.

Yet, they have rules, too.
A code of disobedience.

Criminals
bonded by their love of the search.
Looking for treasure:
a dream come true.
It's buried, so
you have to find it!
The search brings pleasure.

Money is excrement!
However, money embodied as something else,
is --
valued, but also beautiful --
--treasure!

However, once you find it,
if you go home and turn into an adult,
everything goes wrong.
Turn the gold into paper and you
lose everything.
Paper money is simply a promise for tomorrow:
you'll have chocolate and phone sex later.

Treasure is not about the money or reward.
It's all about the search!
Wanting the treasure and
being afraid you will be killed if you find it,
is better than going straight to the treasure.

Fright then the Prize.
Real danger and Time --
pleasure postponed.
Secret languages.
To understand the map,
you have to think like a pirate, and
know the slang of the criminal underworld.

Then, you must carry the belief
and magic into adult life.
The treasure is still there.
You just have to want it!

But beware:
if you violate the rules too much,
if you take your fantasy too far,
you pay for it!
The pirates in the stories always get caught.
Eventually, you have to wake up and
go back to the world!

So, you must carry the belief
and magic into adult life.
The treasure is still there.
You just have to want it!!
