Age Group: Adult
The cold wind drapes its form
Like an icy claw deep and true
Into the rigid solid winter ground
where stirs the soft muffled sound
Of the faes in their Sidhes.
Beneath this winter cloak of snow
where underground the world they show
Of bright rayed tranquil beams
that roosts the midnight's sultry dreams
and falls the time away
The time is the old Cailleach's way
as she stumbles her withered arch away
from icy lochs and frozen burns
where no dandelion sits or yearns
Just brown, dark earthen clay
amidst the straw like array
of woven grass near to deaths decay
Buried upon the pile.
The wind is her enchanted voice
that sweeps the Bens and braes of choice
all to the crackle of earth under foot
the skeleton trees beckons the houlet's hoot
across the empty, barren fields
where mice gather where hedgerow yields
all to the warmth of their bodies be
Above the world of the Sidhe.
Where winter storms its raging path
where life to death faces its wrath
and there in sackcloth roams but she
The mistress of the woodlands dauntingly.
The nights encroach to the world of men
In servitude, laden, tired, defend
The last piles of work of day
where the peat enriches warmth to lay
And comfort weary bones.
A tale, a story primed so well
and devilish look that's bound from hell
The eerie tones dress deep the clay
where pipe smoke fills and there does stray
to the prospects of a springs full day
When life again is found.
Old men cast their timely frowns
where children's heads in aprons drown
all for the fear of the scary sound
That stems beyond the door.
The Cailleach's Drone echoes out long
those lonely places set in song
Lamenting the morning, where death had gone
and stole the breath of life away
Into the twilight world of the fae,
where seasons come and the seasons go
like foot prints buried within the snow
A man's time, his fated charge
seeks the union that roams at large
The mother Goddess in her ancient form
The gale that whispers within the storm.
