CuCuhulain's Last Thoughts

by Fraoch

 Age Group: Adult

If I would have just kissed you That afternoon When you showed up In that green dress A red headed dream Just outside the lines I wouldn’t be here today Aching in death And agony Wishing that I had just Just kissed you A glass of water To a parched throat Honeyed wine Rye whiskey for the blues If I had just kissed you Let your lips Fall onto mine Like ripe berries In summer afternoons By rivers where we could swim And get away from all of this I could take you away From all of this You wouldn’t have to see This This mess these guys Had made of your days If I had kissed you The ravens would have Settled in blossomed trees Relaxed and cawing softly To themselves Filled up on sun light That day I wish that I had kissed you Not for power or fame But because you You, my Goddess You are all that is And will ever be And I wanted you to know That I should have And I did want to Just kiss you And kiss you forever Until you let the stars Just fall around us Like white apple blossoms
Author's Notes: This poem is about CuCuhulain thinking back to when The Morrighan offered Her love to him. He's thinking, "Damn, you know, I really wanted to. I really did, but I thought, not in front of all my mates. If I would have said 'Yeah babe, ' and them not know who She was, they would've have given me hell. I thought She'd understand that."
What he didn't realize was that he was part of a metaphor for all men. He was a prototype, because She knew it was coming. She knew that men were getting ready to get their jockies in a wad about women having so much power. Thus She said, "I will see a world that is not dear to me."
So CuCuhulain is thinking back to how great it would have been to be in love with The Goddess and not with himself. He's got that typical bedside conversion thing going on as Badb is getting ready to perch on his shoulder. He hears Her coming and realizes that Her final kiss is... well...final, and when He sees Her again, he's going to have to deal with the fact that kissing Her this time isn't going to be the same.
He's going to kiss Her as the All, and instead of a kiss that he can hold in his heart for a lifetime, this is a kiss of transformation from life to death back to life. It's true his soul will hold that kiss, but it's not the same. He's going to be pushed out of another uterus, and he won't be able to remember exactly that particular kiss of The Morrighan.
