I Watch

I watch where
the green fine mantel
Turns its shades, those hues
that sprinkle between the rusts and reds
Till brown like the dark resin fades
into the nothingness of winter.
Pale, the harbouring clouds fill
distill in their own the feelings
those dark memories of cold
Frozen capped hills and streams
To the crackling steps in snow.
Dark the winsome night plays
where wind howls upon the peaks
Of mountains drenched white in that gown
an ancient cloth, that sackcloth garment
That hinges upon the marsh and the valleys
like a death frock from long ago.
And yet, here in the yule tides
springs forth the everlasting dreams
that nestles deep amidst the warm glow
of the hearths sweet burning embers
That dance to the mind, drifts one away
into the slumber of hopes and visions
where spring again holds the heart.
And here longing the soft cry
of the robin to the mornings yoke
the sweet chippering song
that rides the air of spring
To the coming days of summer.
And dream we do, deep and far
from these cold fields and lullabies
of winters own.
