The River in January

Kayaking seems a strange form of meditation,
Paddling incongruent with images of ascetics,
But my mind has always drifted along
Oft entangled in eddies of rivers.
The rhythm of my paddle is one-two
And the flash of sunlight on wet, black blades
Is somehow less ephemeral than my concerns
Of bills and books, men and marriage, fashion and facts.
One-two, steady, controlled, like my heartbeat,
Pulsing along with the changing of the seasons
Their cycle reflected in the repetitive arc of my paddle.
One-two like my breathing,
Inhaling spring, and exhaling autumn,
Those perfect moments of stasis in between
Both summer and winter, each unbreath holding
The fire of the blood hot in my lungs
Or the potential ice, suspended and latent.
One-two, push out, then down,
Pull back, shift on my axis, and repeat.
My muscles stretch then contract, one-two
Like the tides as they answer the pull of the moon,
Propelling me forward with only a swish and dip,
To break the silence of my reflection.
