Daphne

(For the nymph, whose father hardened her, in fear of his daughter’s capture by the sun god.)
Do not recognize the face made forget known
still and silent depending on what will me move
sinking and growing taller, stretching unknown
*Beloved nymph...*
sleeping longer every season the wind has blown
dependent on light having stopped waiting to remove
from this flesh shaped hollow turned bark known
the trunk of a still changing body is my own
nudging for my nature still recognizing must prove
dirt between root toes limbs clenching air unknown
*sleeping beauty...*
bark and flesh wintered, toes hands trunk blown
enduring dreaming sheltered stretch feel move
leaf by leaf pulled each thought used known
reaching stretching talling toward, whose own
sleep away leaf by leaf into silent remove
slumber so hardened still will am unknown
*enough.*
catch light, stretch tall reach to feel blown
keep alive by leaf by leaf will not remove
need stand wait dream grow receive known
me better as bark and leaf for air unknown

Author's Notes: -Note: Lines with * indicate italics.
I'm really drawn to trees, the dryad in particular. In my creation of this, I thought about Waterhouse's Daphne and Apollo, a tree whose energy I'm greatly drawn to, and my own relation and interpretation of the myth. This is a revised poem. I hope its the final version.

Imagine Daphne having stayed a laurel tree until our time, how she feels. Though she drifts as though in a dreamscape, she still goes on, accepts her fate, but in her own will...she chooses it because she helps to keep humanity alive. This is also a personal poem.
