Affirmation Of Faith
by Haley Lynn Shoemaker
Age Group: Adult
Good reactions or bad, I know this experience is something I have to share. It's to big, to important, too joyful to keep to myself...
There was nothing particularly unusual about the moment. I was headed to bed (a bit too late) , and I stopped to watch the fire in my fireplace.
As I stared into the flickering flames, I felt a deep contentment wash over me. A kind of religious moment took me, and held me enthralled. An incredibly serene presence sat there with me, by the fire. For the first time, I knew, simply knew that the Goddess was near me, not physically, but spiritually.
For the first time, I felt truely Wiccan. Despite all my unconventional practices and procrastination, my faith felt as pure and true as anyone else’s. To Her, my scattered, vague, distracted attitude toward faith was equal to a daily prayer regime.
How is that possible? Because I've finally realized that anything more attentive, more regular, more reasoned, would be contrary to my nature. And Nature is her realm, after all, in more than one sense.
I know it is certainly presumptuous of me to claim a private audience with Her. But, honestly, this is the closest thing to an epiphany I can claim. I would love to say that I have no doubt about both the truth and the validity of that moment, but the less pleasant part of my nature is to doubt. True epiphany or sleep-deprived raving, it doesn't matter. It was wonderful.
Author's Notes: I have been practicing Wicca for almost six years. Never once has my faith in the Goddess and her consort the Green Man (or the Lord and Lady, or any other number of names, quantities, or genders you wish to issue them) wavered. Yet, despite this, my own natural scatterbrained habits, which apply to everything from love to friendship to work to ambition to faith, have lead me to question the depth of my faith many, many times.
