platonic Souls

Stepping out of time for an eternity
I watch as history ceases to be
Watching, but not waiting
Always act, never hesitating
I am. That is all that matters
I am, and I try to continue to be
But there was a time when I wasn’t
And that time will come again
As the wheel of reality rolls on
Through each life, each breath, each moment
We do not exist, then we do
We are dependent, grasping to our parents
We grow, we expand, we cast out
We replace them with others
Still dependent, though we claim we aren’t
We say independent as though we could be
And we lie to ourselves, believing it
Ignoring the bonds which tie us to the world
Until we sink, in old age
We descend into dependence again
Finally admitting that we need another
Anyone, to take care of us again.
We feel week, and tired
Until we collapse, and are no more.
Returned again to a state of non-existence
A platonic perfection settles over us
As we once existed only in the thoughts
And fears of our parents,
We now exist only in the thoughts
And memories of our children.
Old photographs, and journals
Records, and papers and books
All suggest the history that we once were
And a stone, or urn, or nothing at all
Marks the place where our former shell resides
For we are free of it, free of all,
Achieving perfection, we become nothing
Just an idea, unsubstantial, and perfect.
