Confrontations

by Ehwaz

Age Group: Adult

Stop.
Please, just stop.
No, you don't seem to understand-
when I say "Stop, "
what I really mean is,
"For the love of all that is holy,
shut up!"
Yes, that means to close your Bible,
cut the organ,
and there is certainly
no need to pray for me,
I assure you of that.
Look, I'm sorry for snapping,
I just…
I just really needed you to stop talking.
I'm at my wits end, you see.
And although sometimes
I dream of strangling you all,
I'm not actually very violent.
Neither is my religion.
We, at least, hold by that creed.
No wars are fought in the name of Witchcraft,
though many are waged against us.
But I'm not here to convert
you, pray
at you, or curse
you to your Kingdom Come.
I'm just here to ask you-
not demand without grace, but ask you-
to open your mind
as your good friend did the sea
and give your attention
to those trying to speak.
If we could communicate,
and you could lay down your arms,
then perhaps we could forgo
all this arguing,
this spitting and damning and cursing and praying.
We could all clasp hands and agree
on the sanctity of life,
non-violent protests, when we need change,
the beauty of earth,
and our similar deities.
If you hang your cross
back on the wall,
I promise I won't hex you.
And if we came come to terms
on these few simple things,
then perhaps we can part
friends.

Author's Notes: This is some slam poetry inspired by religious intolerance.
Now, just to clear a few things up:
I don't hate anyone because of their religions.
I don't hate any religions as a whole.
What I do hate is when people treat their religion as the "best" and "only" one and try to shove it down the throats of people who do not practice the same religion. As a Wiccan, I have seen quite a bit of this, especially coming from Christians how feel the need to convert "those devilish hags." I'm sure other people on this site can relate. Again, I don't hate or even feel anger towards most Christians, just those who can't recognize that we both have similarities, and just because we worship differently doesn't make us evil.
I'm just... completely tired of ignorant people. And not even just with ignorance directed at our types of religions, but others as well!
An article that particularly inspired me is listed in the related website box.
