The Krampus

by Sparrowgael
 Age Group: Adult

What’s that shrieking in the distance?
What’s that screaming in the wind?
Do you hear it?
Can you feel it?
Something outside wanting in?
Is it Santa? Lovely Santa?
Making checkmarks on his list?
Or someone else
(or something else)
In a cruel and awful twist?
Think about it, check your heartbeat,
Have you done the best you could?
If they told him,
(And they’ll tell him, )
Would they say that you’ve been good?
Before you answer, lean in closer,
Let me give you some advice;
He’s the one,
The only one,
who’ll thresh the naughty from the nice.
He smells your secrets, tastes your fears,
He catches evil in his sift
and he picks them
(How he picks them!)
Leaving Santa all that’s left
who then by magic, brings his goodies
To the ones whose names he got
He’ll make his flight
(in just one night!)
And visit every child and tot…
Well no not every, there are many
Who do not make the grade
And the Krampus
(Yes, the Krampus)
Has won them in the trade
Some he dines on in his travels
Some he brings along as well;
And he beats them
and mistreats them
and delivers them to hell.
So be certain when you listen
To the noises on your roofs
That it’s Santa
(Lovely Santa!)
And his little reindeer hooves.
Just be on your best behavior
And always keep in mind
He knows your name
He’ll find your shame
and Krampus follows close behind.
Author's Notes: Also of Germanic roots, the myth of the Krampus, the dark side of Santa, pays homage to the days when Christmas and ghost stories went hand in hand. Back then, Santa did not leave coal for naughty children but gave their names to the Krampus; an evil creature who dealt decisively with bad little boys and girls. Make sure those are reindeer on your roof before you go out to see if Santa has taken the milk and cookies. It may be something else...and it may have your name.
