The New Jersey Devil

The Barrens have a tale to tell
This haunted land of pine and oak
Where mist and shade the sunlight quell
And Night is feared by local folk.
They lock their doors; what do they dread?
As Sun sets in the distant west.
They touch their shoulders, chest and head
To thwart a most unwelcome guest.
A creature of such great distort
With bat-like wings and serpent’s tail
Hooves that are of cloven sort
Horse’s head and shrieking wail.
He ravages the chicken cage
And sours milk of local herds
He cries from rooftops mad with rage
A screech unlike the local birds’.
Disaster follows close behind
E’er since the day he left the womb
And so the locals loathe to find
Him, sensing the impending doom.
Mother Leeds, what had you done?
What ghastly act of Witchery,
Caused you curse your 13th son
“Let this one here a Devil be!”
Author's Notes: A life-long resident of the fringes of the Pinelands (North and South) , Laurie will be the first to attest that there is indeed a strange power within these woods.
