Standing in Silence

Scenic sentinels for years unnumbered,
You loom quiet over the grassy plain,
Heeding none and wholly unencumbered,
Our lives meaningless, our dreams sought in vain;
For human existence is but fleeting,
And when we are gone you will still remain.
Stretching to Heaven, your peaks competing,
Straining like trees reaching up to the light.
Giants, both weather and age defeating,
Striving to claim the impossible height.
Hewn by an artist, from Nature’s own bone,
Painted with forests and crowned with snow white,
You'll remain standing in silence alone,
Guarding your secrets and treasures in stone.
