A Valkyrie's Lament

by L Henderson
 Age Group: Adult

By the fireside I sit Alone with only reverie And carving of a Viking ship That once my love had given me.
Bjorn I still remember when Your handsome face the first I saw. On battlefield your helm shone bright Determination set your jaw.
Your hair it gleamed like banner gold As the wind, it swept across your brow And love, it stirred this heart mine own So to myself I made this vow:
To wait until the day you fell And take you up into mine arms To Asgard then and heroes' halls Away from any further harms.
When that day came my soul rejoiced And happiness, it filled my heart. To Asgard then I brought you home With hopes that we would never part.
Before the council you were brought And knelt down low unto your knee. Within your heart you hoped and prayed To live long in Valhalla free.
The council passed their judgement swift And with their words my heart did fall, For you would not be admitted in Valhalla's great and golden hall.
You rose and stood with head bowed low. My arms, they yearned to hold you near. You looked at me with fallen heart And from mine eyes there fell a tear.
For in your eyes, twas love I saw, A love that never was to be You kissed me soft and tender then Before the guards to you from me.
When they had taken you away I met and talked with council long. I tried to move their hearts to see Their judgement was not right but wrong.
Their minds were made, could not be changed, And so I left the councils' walls To Folkvang in fair Vanaheim I sought my Lady in her halls.
She sat resplendent on her throne This proud and beautiful viking queen, Fair of face and her hair of gold The likes which mortal's ne'er have seen.
I knelt before her head bowed low The tears still stinging in my eyes. She looked at me with pitied glance For ne'er had she seen Myrandia cry.
"My daughter tell me what is wrong What ails thine heart with Sorrow's tear. It hurts me deep to see you so You've but to speak and I will hear."
"Great Freya hear me this I ask My heart in two, it has been torn. I cannot bear to be away Apart from my beloved Bjorn.
"He fought with honor, strong and brave And valiant he was with his sword. He should be allowed to live In Valhalla's halls as his reward."
She looked at me with sadness then "There is but one was this can be. To leave your home, Valhalla fair And give up immortality."
I thought a moment to myself, Then looked my Lady in her eye. "This I will do, but grant this wish To see Bjorn and say goodbye."
She nodded and my love was brought. We walked along our hands entwined, And whispered words of endless love And with those words our souls did bind.
When we at last had said goodbye I walked along unto the ridge. With one last look I turned and sighed And crossed the rainbow Bifrost Bridge.
My only hope is now to live A life of honor, standards high, And hope and pray to worthy be To live in Valhalla when I die.
So by the Fireside I sit Alone with only reverie, And carving of a Viking ship 'Til I am once again with thee.
