Bell, Book and Candle

Age Group: Adult
Bell-
As a small child
we hear bells
Beckoning us to enter the
schools of learning
Later in life
we again respond
to a different bell
Awakening us from dream filled sleep
the start of a new work filled day
In the end
the bells again chime
signaling the end of our life
Family sorrow abounds
Book-
When we enter the world
all fresh and new
A chapter of the story of our life
commences
When out parents snap the first picture of us
and the ink from our footprints dries
Later in life
the good deeds as well as the bad
Are how our family and peers
perceive our worth
Snapping images of our accomplishments
of who we have become
At out passing
again an image appears
In our obituary
the story of our life
Candle-
From our first birthday
we learn to celebrate
Each passing year
with the blowing out of candles
Later in life we once again
celebrate birthdays of our family
and friends
A different candlelight
to behold
When the light fades from our eyes
and we are at rest
an indefinite sleep
The Clergy extinguishes our candle
during burial services
the end of our life
Ring the bell softly
close the book pages softly
the ending chapter is done
Blow out the candle
our spirit ascending
to the heavens above
Signaling our death.
