Weep For The Death Of Summer

Age Group: Adult
Mossy sentinel of standing rot,
Corners square as any knot,
Aspen leaf with blood-red dot,
And down the hill a circle.
Spruce stump altar,
With deep root legs,
A dark earth-anchor.
Stones squat,
And trees melt back into the ground.
Tangled root-men stand,
Like ripped up carpet,
Of turf and rock,
Where two trees fell.
Thunder rolls,
Down the canyon,
While the cold river races,
Over sharp stone teeth.
The moon shines,
Through black branches,
And dark clouds and mist,
Fall in the forest,
At the foot of the mountain.
I sit in the midst,
Awaiting…….
Returning through meadows,
Strung like teardrops,
In the early morning chill,
A bull elk whistles,
And I weep for the death of summer.
