The Dance of Deity

by Ailuros
 Age Group: Adult

Curled under the blanket of cold winter white, The Snow Goddess sleeps through day and through night Her body relaxes, her breath blows through the trees No leaves can fall now, as everything sleeps Though under the face of the silent snow queen Life stirs in its waking, yet cannot be seen Her eyes slowly open and squint with the glare That the sun brings to her through the mess of her hair Before her is standing the Young Lord of Gold He holds out his hand for her to grab hold With the stirring of her body, snow flies through the air And from the hill rises her form oh so fair She takes the God’s hand and they dance through the snow And it melts under foot everywhere that they go The trees lose the shine of the cold barren death The grasses sway with the dancers’ increasing breaths With the final pirouette, they fall to the ground The snow has all melted; there’s hardly a sound They lay there together in each others’ arms And watch clouds go by as the Earth warms Every year it’s the same, they know the routine But every year it’s so special, like it’s never been seen A bird can be heard calling mates through the trees A deer fawn emerges, weak at the knees The two dancers lay quiet, smiling but still As life seems to blossom, as is their will The Maiden stands softly, finding the last bit of snow She tucks it away for the future she knows She takes the Prince’s hand and together they sing, “Welcome Life, Welcome All, and Welcome to Spring!”
