Lamplight

"Smoke-filled alleyways, the familiar, stained stones beneath the feet, the rusted penny rolls away, into the pitchest night amidst the drunken fog.
The shadows they cast, yellowed, to match the toothed grins of
passers-by--vagrants bathed in bliss, their only closeness to
cleanliness coming from the wet bottle.
The thin, metallic arms part the earth like a tombstone between the elms, each engraved with their own epitaph--the lamp: "Here be whores and drunkards", and the tombstone: "Here be their lost remains".
Rattled by the Bobby's nightstick, the echo shatters the Horde like
fire to a feasting tick, gorging on blood, then falling off only till
its hunger strikes again...and again.
They scurry from lamplight to lamplight like rats, in search of some
fresh meat to devour, gnawing the bones to mimic the rhythmic gnawings of the bottles of whiskey, perfected by the true taproom carrion."
