I Have Known

I have known happiness
In waking to the beauty of a golden sunrise
In listening to a gorgeous song and knowing nothing else
In watching the face of my beloved, knowing that he felt the same
I have known sadness
In the tears that have been shed for the past
In the soft goodbye kiss that ended a beautiful love
In the knowledge that life does indeed go on without you
I have known beauty
In the simple rose that blooms from amongst the thorns
In the Full Moon rising, Her beautiful rays shining down on the Earth
In the haunting cry of the mourning dove at the first light of dawn
I have known love
In the hand-holding and shared lunches of childhood
In the first glances and awkward dates of adolescence
In the passionate fires of a lust that burns into the soul
I have known exactly who I am
Because I have known all this and more
