A Stranger's Eyes

To you and I, she is simply sipping her coffee
But she, the only one who truly knows
Is trying to put together the broken pieces
Her hopes, her dreams, her fantasies, her life
And as she does so, she tries to come to terms with the fact
That she alone was the one who dropped the fragile thing
I look at her across the coffee house, dotted with people
A gentle fire churning in the fireplace, the scent of coffee rising through the air
Her eyes reflect her hidden sorrows, tucked away where only she can see
Each line on her face tells a story
Of love lost, found, and lost again
Of broken promises and shattered dreams
The gray and silver strands sprinkled in her hair
Seem to tell me that she is not of this world at this time
She is alone in her universe, although in a room with many others
She is seeing things that no one else sees
She knows things that no one else understands, or ever will
As she sips the last drops of her coffee
Our eyes meet, my eyes telling her of my naiveté
Her eyes daring me to feel all that she has felt in her lifetime
Then, the look fades, she nods, and then smiles faintly but sweetly
And I know that she has just made amends with her conscience
Or she has simply found satisfaction in a good cup of coffee
By the time she walks out the door into the chilly winter night
I’ve forgotten which one it was
