La Liberte

I lie awake, restless, yet again
I am tired, but I cannot sleep
I lie in bed, but my eyes refuse to close
Something is keeping me awake
And I intend to find out what it is
A wave of sadness washes over me
Seemingly out of nowhere
And I begin to cry, the hot tears cascading down
So hot that they seem to burn a trail on my skin
I light a candle in my window as a beacon
Hoping to find the reason for the tears in the darkness
I spout honesty, hidden truths, to nothing and everything at the same time
Alternating between French and English, the truth slowly escapes
In each stifled sob, in each burning tear
Hours pass before my crying ceases
But by then it’s too late to even try to sleep
I get up and wash my face, and then I pick up a book
And read it to the very last pages
Finally free of the burden I’d carried for far too long
And then, I sit quietly, watching the night fade with the moment
Into the diluted periwinkle of dawn
The crickets’ chirps becoming the birds’ songs of promises yet to be fulfilled
