Damsel In Distress? I Think Not

by Ruby Tuesday
 Age Group: Adult

You came knocking at my door one morning A door that was badly beaten and splintered with the wounds of yesterday In fact, the place that you knocked upon broke off onto the floor You ignored this fact and continued to knock until I answered You asked to see the damsel in distress And I was confused until I realized that you meant me I told you, quietly at first, that I wasn’t in need of saving And that I was perfectly fine on my own, but you wouldn’t listen You felt it was your duty to save me from my prison sentence Finally, I quieted you, and I told you to look at the door you had knocked upon I proceeded to tell you the story of each and every dent, splinter, and chip I told you how each missing piece came to fall off of the door You seemed stunned that I remained standing after each blow I took advantage of this silence and told you the truth That I’ve never wanted to be saved by anyone That I’ve never wanted to be carried off by a knight or a prince And that I’ve just wanted to be loved and cared for by someone who could realize That I am my own person and that I can take care of myself That I don’t need saving Now that this secret is discovered, that I am no damsel in distress My valiant knight takes his wild stallion and runs He runs to find a woman who has lost a glass slipper Or whose hair sways from the tallest tower, beckoning to him to rescue her Or whose body remains trapped in a glass coffin, her body poisoned I watch you galloping off into the sunset, and I sigh to myself I live with no regrets, but it’s hard to feel important When I continue to get replaced by someone else I will never comprehend how these brave knights and princes Ride off into the sunset thinking that they can save someone else When they can’t even save themselves
