Little Constance

by Cwydd ap Gwydion

[WVox Sponsor]

Age Group: Adult

Constance McCrery McGonagall Dee,
Had a small cut on the top of her knee,
T’was barely a nick, not close to the bone,
But the silly young girl could not leave it alone.

She pulled off the bandage, played in the dirt,
And puzzled each day as it grew red and hurt.
It itched and it burned and it stung like a bee,
That former, small nick, on the top of her knee.

She cried to her mommy of all the great pain,
Said she’d never play in that bad dirt again.
Then scratched at the wound as if seeking relief,
But the sight of the blood had instead brought more grief.

"It must be the dirt!!!" she cried, "That’s to blame!"
Her mother did nothing, but look on in shame,
Then knelt down before her, with love and with care,
Imparted the wisdom she thought she should share.

"Constance McCrery McGonagall Dee, "
Her mother said sternly as she tended the knee.
"Your hurt would be past you, " she wearily crooned,
"If only you hadn’t kept fing'ring your wound."

"A mere nick infected, it wasn’t before,
you tore off your bandage, tossed it to the floor,
and then blamed the dirt for your hurt and your rue,
when all along silly, it started with you."

Now, Constance McCrery McGonagall Dee,
Who had a small cut on the top of her knee,
Learned a valuable lesson, she’d never have known,
That a wound just won’t heal if not left alone.

Author's Notes: A lyrical poem that draws a bit of inspiration from Shel Silverstein. While it seems like a child's poem, the allegory is that sometimes we perpetuate our own "hurts" and seek to blame other things. Sometimes the key to cure begins within.

I wrote this one a couple of years ago. Hope you like it!
