The Roses

The roses grow wild on suburban streets
I’ve never noticed them before
I don’t think they’ve ever been there until now
The petals are covered with dew, glistening in the early morning light
I walk down the sidewalk, breathing the freshest air I’ve ever breathed
Taking in each and every scent, sight, sound, touch, taste
It’s like I hadn’t truly lived until I saw those roses
I’m not sure when they arrived
All I know is that I woke up before dawn, and there they were
I don’t know if they were there yesterday
Or the day before that
Or the year before that
I put on my coat to protect myself from the chill and walked outside
The roses seemed to shy away
If I didn’t know better, I’d say the petals closed more tightly around themselves
I didn’t know what else to do
So I stood there and watched the roses swaying gently in the early morning breeze
As the sun peeked out over the horizon, they seemed to perk up
And as the light increased over the drenched landscape, the air around me warmed
And I felt comfortable enough to take off my coat
The petals opened wide, seemingly illuminated from within
And seemed to reach for me
I instinctively reached for them and ran my fingers along the soft petals
And realized that somehow, I was falling in love with them
So now, here I stand, in love with those wild suburban roses
I don’t know if they will be here again tomorrow
So I think I’ll just stay here for another hour
Maybe a week
Maybe forever
