Elegy to a Fallen Star
by Venus of the Earth
Age Group: Adult
You once were regarded with such respect,
You, with the power to stop war in its tracks,
You, who cripple a man with your rejection,
We are in need of you now, but you are gone.
Where are the compassion and kindred?
Where is the friendship of men?
Gone, as the star of the evening
Fades away with the dying of light.
Marriages, like children, die without a Mother,
And as you turn your fair face from us,
Those self-same infants starve
And die in bitter divorce.
Oh Venus! Oh Love! Why have you gone?
We need you for light; we need you for life.
Return to us, Bright Star, with the dawn.
Return, and bring back the sun.
