Making Murano Glass

Making Murano Glass
Outside, in the world akin to a grand canal
and noble basilicas; water flows, interwoven
with cylindrical spins of color that rise in
spurts against the white smoke of morning
furnaces.
A melon-sized clear sphere is stretched
smooth, as it grows in preparation, fueled
by a gas torch, and the small ritual breathes
and hand movements that begin with the
precision of anticipation.
Heat and gravity mash patterns embellished
by variety and the dichotomy between restraint
and abandon. There’s a sculpture of a cherub
that watches symbolically, the spontaneity of
passion, without structure, formless.
The formal and symmetrical start naturally, a kind
of blueprint for each characteristic feature that
will set it apart from all the rest. Depending on
the lighting, they can look two-dimensional,
in their subtle waves and curlicues.
Fumes and heat wander among the tourists as a
church bell rings in one of those unplanned
moments of exceptional beauty that becomes
the footbridge to a rite of spiritual uplifting,
and passage.
There’s discovery in the flying debris, slow
particles of energy contained in the blaze, and
the smell of charred wood from the hearth mixes
with the aroma of coffee brewing, where a smile
is indication that the master has transferred his idea,
into glass.
