One's own appointment with Fate no one surely knows;
Many years from now? Or is there even tomorrow?
If I die today, should you take it as a sorrow?
From what I know of me, why not let jubilance be!
If I could choose my date, when would mine end?
Let it be the end of summer,
When dying seems not quite so odd,
(A passing into Summerland!)
Like the dying of some solar god.
Why should you grieve for me when I have passed?
Do the leaves of autumn turn sadly blue?
Why, no! They take on every lively hue
To celebrate each day down to the last!
Should not the burden of a heavy heart be relieved
By the sights and sounds of ruddy leaves?
Listen to the twigs and leaves go snap! crackle! Stop!
Behold the golden crowns upon the treetops!
Why not let your spirit dance with the orange leaf?
