In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust

by Radko Vacek
 Age Group: Adult

We can be haunted by the memories Of those whom we hurt, who deserved the best. Sometimes, while being angry or insane In states fleeting as a storm or a fog, We treat our loved ones with imperfect love, And sever the cord of mutual trust. It's hard to entrust our most beloved Into hands whose love has proved unsteady, But harder still to lose what we most love By rejecting what helping hands there are! We can hardly expect the world to sing A perfectly loving, trustworthy song When we have not trusted the world ourselves, And not loved it in some form all along. Anyone may love the world in some form: Of the harbiger of spring, the earthworm, Of the lord of summer, the croaking frog, Of the hunting helper of fall, the dog, Of the builder of the snowman, the child, Of cats, rats, whatever form it might take.
Anyone may really work for its sake, But when our trust in the world is so mild As to doubt that the means being given To sustain that, which we love, should be done, Our love needs real work to be perfected. Great is the trust of our Lady birthing, Who believes all her creatures to be worth The pains of laboring to give them birth! If we trusted with even half such strength, We might not be starving nearly as much For protective love from a patron god.
