The Thoroughly Magickal Ant

"All creatures great and small"!
We often ignore among the most valuable of them all,
In not even thinking of them as animals!
You no doubt think that you value your pet, but you really can't
If you ain't valuing the ant!
Every ant is the epitome of honest labor,
The most basic, down-to-earth virtue anyone can hope for.
Sure, all creatures, man included, labor to live,
But ants? They live to labor, and as they ceaselessly strive,
How they affirm the value of staying alive!
Every ant lives solely for the hill.
How feeble we are, so weak of will!
Always we ask why: for this little, why should I work so?
"I pull my weight! What more can I do!"
Ants pull weights so heavy they nearly die!
Oh, the thoroughly magickal ant! Never does it ask why,
Nor have I ever heard one complain, over all the earth!
Therein lies their lesson of priceless worth.
If we can't value that in the humblest animal,
How can we hope to respect ourselves at all?
Author's Notes: In tribute to Walt Whitman, who lauded the virtues of the animals. "All creatures great and small" - from a traditional English hymn, and the name of the British TV series about country vets.
