A Fine Tale

The Magickal Name! That's not just some game
To hunt down! I want to honor the name.
I'm pondering...Could that be it? "Cabell?" 1
Cabell! That has a fine TAIL behind it!
Well, ... the ASPCA won't mind it,
But what will the rest say? "Why, a name for
A dog! REALLY! A dog's name is not swell",
You say? You think that magick needs much more?
I've known many dogs. They always taught me
That very powerful magick called love.
Cabell maybe was even more unique
Than Lassie, Rin Tin Tin...but not Jasper! 2
Cabell, King Arthur's huge hound, went along
To hunt the Mean Boar through Ireland and Wales.
With Cabell's nose guiding, no move went wrong:
King Arthur drove the Bore into the sea!
But a quiet rock best tells the story
Of the loyal dog and valliant glory.
They say, one of Cabell's paws made a print
Into a rock. After his dog had died,
King Arthur raised a cairn in memory
Of Cabell, and put that rock on its peak.
When that rock is removed, goes the legend,
It's back the next morning, magickally!
Who could be that powerful, to remove
The rock which stands for their mutual love?
What could have a bewitching charm greater
Than the canine kind, of loving labor?
Besides, one rhyme can beat many reasons,
And one sound rhyme can fit all four seasons:
The timing feels right for working a spell.
Swell is the rhyming with the name Cabell!
Author's Notes: 1 The name also has been given as Cavall.
2 Jasper is a Lab/Shepherd dog belonging to two fine ladies in our Coven. He is quite unique in his tolerance towards their cats, and friendliness towards visitors, that is, even more than we might expect from most dogs.
