Often, it is the roof of lowly reeds,
Under which a person peacefully goes
With the flow, that the blithe spirit selects.
Listen! When the wind blows, the reeds do heed,
Subtle though their response is, whispering
What sounds like a song of glad laborers,
Approaching some noble, triumphant close.
Or is it, rather, the spirit which makes
The music for the merriment's good sake?
I do think that the spirit well subjects
The lowly reeds to making higher things,
Which in turn brings into sounder order
The mind of everybody under them.
It is the spirit, acting overhead,
That makes the difference, alive or dead,
Sounding the song, the hymn, or the anthem!
But, after all, it is our attitude
Which invites the spirit, friendly or rude.
