Age Group: Adult

"Breathtaking her countenance, Mystery her name,
Lady is her title, regardless of her game.
In magical slippers she dances,
As when, once upon a time, she came.
She dances star by star along
The Milky Way and hums her song!"

"While she juggles all the priceless times
Around and around like countless dimes.
She pulls together the points of worldly places
Into her moving grace, and poignant rhymes!"

"Pointless seem the movements of her dance,
But perhaps the pointlessness of chance
Lets the likes of me, and poetry, be?
That I call mystery, and Lady Mystery is she!"

Beyond the old oak tree, galled and gnarled, lie one, maybe two
Treasure chests, buried! The squirrel buried the chestnut.
I watch it, climbing up the oak. My apologies,
Ms. Kilmer. Hopefully you won't turn over,
But why not add, "Only God can make -
A squirrel!" How foolish for us, after all,
To run across a wire! Not even half as well!
I could train this one to walk right through my house!
Smart enough to earn nuts, smarter yet to save them,
What better case for Intelligent Design can anyone find,
Than that much smartness in this squirrel's peanut brain?
What was that! Could it be that there, just past those trees, flew

A point of white light over the stagnant water? A will-o-the-wisp?
Or was that dying Goethe's last wish granted, "More light"?
Who knows how many wish-granting fairies dwell nearby?
They might have homes hidden, like that of the opossum.
Piece by piece, our dog kept tearing off wood until,
Cornered inside the fallen trunk, we saw the opossum, terrified!
That is the horror of the hunt, and the thrill - for dogs!

Life is a high-stakes game. Heart strings get tugged, but what can we do?
As for the prey, so for the predator, this is a world seemingly set up -
For suffering! Dogs go with the woe of their master. He loses his job,
His mind, and they lose the world which they have known.
Pondering suddenly gives way to wondering, as the oddest feeling
Overwhelms me! It feels like being watched. No, not quite. Rather,
I feel something like a presence, unseen, unheard, clear out from the blue!

The haunting is - the feeling heart, by mystery awakened.
The dreams and the magic were values, by formulas defined.
No longer are there values well defined, and I feel like -
An earthworm exposed to the light, stunned!

I pause, I ponder; I wonder: could this be true?
"Lady Mystery"! Is that - you?
