Above and Beyond

I do love to go behind and below
The houses, where blossoming grass abounds
And the wooded slope descends to the creek.
In such nooks, the hungry stray may be found,
And other things, hard to find and to grasp,
For hardly does anyone seek them there.
Wealth in your front yard is easily seen,
But if it is something up in the air,
Like the treasured images of a hawk
Circling overhead, only seekers see.
Now think of the veiled wonders of spirit!
May the seeker with the psychic eye be.
Who has seen the wind? You? I picture it
As a cat gracefully bending the blades,
Or as a tiger charging at its prey,
As all the leaves shake, thoroughly dismayed.
I picture the wind as Death, its features
Feeding maggots, with that stench infamous,
As all the branches bow with deference,
As do all the creatures. Even in us,
While we proclaim victory over Death,
The spirit just below our awareness
Might be bowing to him, the Lord of Gales,
The nightmare haunting the dreamy surface?
But why not picture Death as the Lady,
Atropos who cuts the threads of our lives
At her discretion? Not even Zeus can
Overrule her, to let someone survive!
Lady Death may be neither feared nor shunned,
But rather accepted, even welcomed
Sometimes, as a way to a higher good.
Death might sound the beat of the sacred drum.
Behind and below human consciousness,
Above and beyond the parts which we play,
The Goddess in us gives us the courage:
Sacrifice is love, in the highest way!
