The Fairy Ring

by Radko Vacek
 Age Group: Adult

"I feel dead myself, as I remember Lucy, with the fire dying in her eyes. Not in my wildest dreams would I leave her! If only I were dreaming! Here she lies." From behind the tree trunk, Dorothea, A lovely fairy of the Mound Leafair, Spies William in his melancholia. She feels moved by the depths of his despair. "Deeper, deeper I dig, at last to where Her body may rest, beside the blythe place Where I first saw the sun glisten her hair, And where our hearts first met in fond embrace." Dorothea calls her friend, Daisy Joy, To come and look upon the sorry face Of the man, whose beauty sorrows destroy, To Cupid's honor, to the Fates' disgrace. "At last the grave is done, my body too, Drained by a task no one wants extended, But since she loved blossoms still damp with dew, I plant roses to mark her final bed."
By now, scores of fairies have come to see William choose to gather his last strength to Honor the modest beauty of Lucy. They all exclaim, "What a fine deed to do!"
Fall turns into winter, and into spring. Near Midsummer this sight makes William weep: On Lucy's grave appears a fairy ring! His choice moved them to sanctify her sleep!
We cannot change the sad points passed themselves, But we can choose the end to which they go. The extra tribute paid prompted their spell Of sanctity uplifting his sorrow.
That enchantment brings to mind the rainbow After the potentially deadly storm. The magical threshold is now: do go The way along which better endings form!
