Common Good

by Radko Vacek
 Age Group: Adult

What could be more common than a kitten? Yet only fools say that it is not good. Kittens are more welcome than the mittens Worn on ice-cold days. A golden childhood Is less so when it is minus the meow. What can beat feeling like a mother-cat? Lessons in love are fine things to endow, And caregiving a swell chore to go at. The grace of the cat is for everyone, That greatness which few want, but many need. Dogs are remembered for services done, But cats can work magic, which we should heed. The feline spell is to raise and to heal, And common good to teach children to feel.
Author's Notes: Written in response to statement by Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evil, #43: "how could there exist a 'common good'! The expression is a self-contradiction: what can be common has ever but little value." Poor man, to have had a boyhood without kittens!
