Hopes

Athena is wonderful, to have sprung
Out of the forehead of Zeus, fully grown,
With the utmost quality of wisdom -
Of all boons the hardest by which to come!
Who knows? Perhaps often a soldier dies
To keep Athena so stunningly wise.
As for Hermes, the patron of males young
And cunning in their making of mischief,
His wits are great, but still he is a thief,
Funny, but also maybe making grief.
Heracles, a demigod, my hero,
Well atones with twelve labors for those deeds,
Which a state of insanity can breed,
The murders of his beloved children.
Are any of us above it, as men
Subject to our irrational passions?
He harnesses all his heroic force
For the sake of atonement. What remorse
Moves his muscles and charges all his mind
To make sublime that which was so unkind!
The better side of remorse is kindness.
It is his conscience which moves him to bless
The memories of his beloved with
Labors raised to the magic of a myth.
Heracles is true to the heart: how real
He is, on the level at which we feel!
Heracles can even raise hopes in me
And you, of heroes we should strive to be!
Heracles is in us, the choice is ours
To make superhuman our human powers.
