Reaching the divine sun is the purpose,
Which its life served, so the songs of the winds
Were real in the private reality
Of the sunflower. It pursued to be,
Against all odds surrounded by its foes,
Pebbles! Resistant soil! The bugs of spring!
Without one single, helping hand, it thrust
Its roots between the lines of resistance
And, imbibing all the water it could,
Fought with the attitude, "I can, I must,
I will!" It did, with its heroic stance,
Every act that a sacred flower should!
Thus, cell by cell, up sprung the sunflower,
As the epitome of the power
Of devotion and the good will, to stand
So far over all the rest and before
Hyperion, its holy, solar Lord,
With faith as strong as when its quest began!
Then finally it bowed its weary head
And shed its seeds of adoration down.
As its sunny petals turned earthy brown,
One thought it might even rise from the dead!
