Oh Dionysos,

What a god, this Pan! Like a foolish man,
Pan has been loafing since the day began,
And might well keep doing so way past dark!
Pan darts about, as carefree as a lark,
Pipes magical tunes, and enchants the nymphs!
They spryly play his games, sometimes tease him,
And seem to dance dances to children's songs.
Cruel is the person who finds Pan wrong!
His seeming foolishness strikes me as kind,
A leaving of pretentiousness behind
In the institutions of man. Remote
From that side of man, Pan is partly goat
And all god in a way perfectly right,
More than Apollo, so cleverly bright.
